Resistors and Capasitors

Can someone explain the point of and how to use resistors and capacitors? I'm new to DIY projects.

Wow, Thats a pretty broad question, but I will try and help you as best as I can

Resistors:
Used for limiting the amount of current going through the part of a circuit. Something you may have come across is the equation V = IR where I is current, R is resistance and V is voltage.
Using two resistors you can create what it known as a voltage divider. Basically you can "chop down" any voltage you have to a lower one for use in other parts of the circuit.

Capacitors:
Used for storing charge. Their use in actual circuit design can be varied. They can be used to "store" voltage for a time where it may be needed to discharge it. In particular, timing circuits make use of a capacitors ability to charge and discharge.

I have given a very general overview of these two electronic components, what you will come across is that it is the way in which components are arranged which affects their purpose in a circuit more than the actual component. For example, A resistor and capacitor together togerther are used to form a frequency dependant signal filter.

Id suggest reading this site to start off with:

It provides lots of helpful information and a few useful tools to help you along. If you have any further questions then post them and I will be happy to help.
