What is the best free application out there for sharing an internet connection via WiFi on the Motorola Droid?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I use android-wifi-tether from android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com
on my hero. (you have to have root access) I like it quite well. You can control who connects to your 'mini access point' and the speed is good. It appears the droid is supported also.

First, a prerequisite: your droid must be rooted. If you can/may/have rooted it, I recommend this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Please note that if you end up bricking your phone, I cannot be held responsible, nor liable. Also, rooting your phone may be against your TOS with your carrier, and if they discover that you have rooted your phone, they most likely have the right, and they most defiantly have the ability to terminate your contract, or serve you with fees.

Wifi tether is a great program and works just like an access point -- but to use it you have to have a custom kernel to use it. If this is not beyond your skill level, go for it. If you only root your phone, you have another option; Barnacle. Barnacle tethers just like the previously mentioned program, but can use the stock kernel. It does this because it puts the wifi card into ad-hoc mode instead of access point mode.

I currently run with Wifi tether on my droid, but i have rooted it and replaced the kernel. Rooting is going to be the first step no matter which tethering program you use.
