I'm not sure you could call it a "tool" but Linux/GNU in its many forms would be the most valuable thing I use every day. From running firewalls to scanning windows hard drives for viruses, it does it all for me and my company. Other than that... Maybe coffee. :D

As far as hand tools I have to say a MIG welder. As far as ease of use in welding its at the top. Practically a point and click interface.

Then ass far as software nothing is better then ye olde basic text editor like gedit

I would have to say breadboard. Soldering iron is a great tool and I use it very frequently, but after getting a breadboard I can design circuits without solder and I can go through numerous revisions before I get it right, then I can make a board and solder the final design. I also would be lost without a multimeter, mine's a cheap one but I use it a ton.

Leaving out obvious stuff like soldering irons and hot glue guns...

SW:
* Linux -- very easy to connect programs together, lets me access devices at very low-level. Totally geeky. Also, runs about 2x faster than Windows on my machine.
* Gedit -- I like how it's so stripped-down that I know exactly what it's doing when I compile/clean/whatever. Easily configured shortcuts to custom shell scripts are a big plus!
* Inkscape -- for icons, creating graphics from scratch

HW:
* bent-nose pliers -- great for straightening out resistor leads, desoldering components, moving wires on crowded breadboards...
* solder flux paste -- works awesome with desoldering braid, soldering to unusual metals, detailed and delicate jobs)
* oscilloscope -- the hacker's microscope. Makes it easy to see really quick and tiny signals. Absolute must for audio, radio, HF-digital, etc.

I design and build "large" circut boards with hundreds of very tiny components.
Soldering Stations: Metcal MX-500 (Love of my life), Weller WCTPT - I hate adjustable irons.
Eagle PCB - Hate it but its the best out there for the price and it does everything I need, with some work.
Stereoscope - Have you ever tried to solder a 402 component? Swear to god its as big as a couple of grains of sand.
Tektronix TMS-200 - Not going to win the worlds greatest scope award but it gets the job done for a reasonable price.
Adjustable Power supply - One of my most expensive peaces of equipment and one of the most used.
GoodFET - Gods the things Ive done to this thing
Arduino - Ask a silly question
Vast assortment of 4$ screwdriver kits from lowes. I figure whats the harm of buying cheap and crappy screwdrivers? I'm gonna loose them before they wear out anyway.
Dremel Stylus - Fantastic for those small rework jobs.
Heat Shrink - You should always shield... always.
Heat Shrink Gun - Sometimes you need it hotter.

And thats about all I can think of for now. Off to the bus! Finals Time!

KiCad. It's free open-source schematic capture and PCB layout software. It runs on Windows and Linux, and I've used it on both platforms. I've designed well over a dozen boards with it. It's full-featured, it's powerful, and unlike most of the 'free' PCB packages, it has no limitations on number of pads, board size, etc.

Last week, the most valuable tool was a USBEE-SX.

It allowed me to look at an asynchronous serial signal that changed baudrates
from 9,600 to 460,800 baud.

I could see every character going and returning from the device as well as
the timing in between the messages. It was a lifesaver.

fix-alls:
hot glue gun + many glue sticks
super glue
electrical tape
gorilla tape
zip ties (big bag of tiny ones)
soldering iron + solder
Looped End Tie Wires (rebar ties, like big paperclips)
razor blades (pack of 100, steel backed)
fibreglass resin

I can fix anything using these tools and supplies
